Brief History of the Organization and Description of Existing Services
The Northside Center has a long history and a strong purpose in the local community. The Northside Center was established in 1989 by the El Campo Independent School District, City of El Campo, and volunteer citizens. The El Campo Independent School District awarded the Northside Center off campus property to promote community development through avenues of education for people of all ages. The property is the original structure of the "Old Northside School" built in the 1950's.

The Northside Center is located in El Campo, Texas, approximately 55 miles south on Highway 59 corridor from the metropolitan city of Houston. El Campo has a population of 11,200 people. The Northside Center serves 1,350 residents per year, with 59% youth, 35% adults, and 6% elderly. Many successful community organizations currently utilize space at the Northside Center.

First, the Boys & Girls Club of El Campo was formed in 1990 on the Northside Center campus. The Boys & Girls Club serves approximately 800 children in the community.  The organization provides a safe learning environment for youth during after school hours and in the summer. The club offers positive programs for youth ages 6-18.

Second, in 1990, the Association of Retired People created a Senior Citizens Center on the Northside Center Campus. The Senior Citizens  Center is used weekly for group meetings and community programs for elderly adults.

Third, Wharton County Library Branch of El Campo was able to relocate their operations to a new facility in 1997 with the Northside Center's assistance.

Fourth, Wharton County Junior College uses building space to provide residents with Adult Basic Education (GED) to the community.

Finally, the newest facility, the Northside Education Center, renovated in 2002 provides residents with credit college courses, continuing education courses, and workforce development training. Wharton County Junior College and University of Houston-Victoria partner with Northside Center to bring residents this great educational opportunity. Northside Center's purpose is to benefit all age groups in the community.
